C'est parce qu'il pourrait être là, aux côtés de ce public, sur les mêmes bancs, que Johnny Cash chante ses chansons avec une telle conviction. Là où d'autres auraient reculé – chanter pour des détenus, et en faire un album (même deux !), n'a rien de très médiatique –, lui fonce bille en tête. Par deux fois donc, Cash, l'homme en noir, aura conduit sa carcasse de rebelle devant les taulards. Et dans cette première expérience de 1968, il entraîne ses hommes – dont un impeccable Carl Perkins à la guitare – face à une tumultueuse assistance dont on redoute à tout instant qu'elle n'explose. At Folsom Prison est comme ça : une marmite en ébullition où Cash multiplie les mots justes, car il fut lui aussi derrière les barreaux en son temps. "Tout ce qu'il vous reste, dans votre cellule, ce sont vos instincts les plus animaux", dira-t-il. Des sentiments qui lui inspireront la chanson-symbole du disque, "Folsom Prison Blues". Ce 13 Janvier 1968, sous les néons crus de la grande cafétéria de la prison, 2000 cœurs vont battre la pulsation d'un voyou qui chante pour eux "L'Herbe verte de la maison" ("Green Green Grass Of Home"). Sous les fusils des matons, on peut presque sentir la tension extrême qui en résulte. Une bombe à retardement. --José Ruiz
